The technology behind ceramic toilet manufacturing

2025-05-07

We use toilets every day and they have become an integral part of modern families. But have you ever wondered how a seemingly ordinary ceramic toilet is transformed from a lump of mud into a solid, smooth, and unobstructed bathroom product? In fact, there are many technologies and techniques hidden behind this.

Starting with raw materials

The raw materials of ceramic toilets mainly include kaolin, clay, quartz and feldspar. These minerals go through processes such as crushing, screening, mixing, and impurity removal, and finally become fine and uniform mud. The ratio and purity of raw materials are directly related to the density and compressive strength of the toilet.

Molding is the key step

The prepared mud is poured into the mold by injection or pressing. Grouting is currently a more common molding method. After the mud is poured into the plaster mold, the moisture is absorbed by the mold and the mud gradually forms a solid on the surface of the mold. This step may seem simple, but improper control may result in uneven thickness or deformation.

Ceramic Toilets

Natural drying and finishing

After the toilet blank is formed, the blank is still very fragile and needs to be dried naturally to allow the moisture to evaporate slowly. During the drying process, time and humidity must be strictly controlled, otherwise the green body will easily crack. After drying, small defects such as burrs, bubbles, holes, etc. need to be trimmed and smoothed to lay a good foundation for subsequent glazing and firing.

Glazing makes the surface smooth and white

Glazing not only makes the surface of the ceramic toilet as smooth as a mirror, but also has the effect of anti-fouling and anti-scratch. Antibacterial ingredients are added to the glazes commonly used in modern toilets, making them more hygienic to use. Glazing requires workers to spray evenly by hand or machine. If the glaze layer is too thin, it will easily leak, while if it is too thick, it will affect the appearance and sewage drainage effect.

High temperature firing is a decisive step

All processed toilet blanks will be sent to high-temperature kilns for firing, and the temperature generally reaches over 1200 degrees. At such a high temperature, the ceramic body and the glaze layer will fuse and take shape at the same time, forming a hard and durable finished product with a dense and shiny surface. The firing time and temperature curve need to be strictly controlled, otherwise deformation or cracking will occur.

The design of the sewage system is also very particular

A qualified ceramic toilet is not only beautiful in appearance, but more importantly, it has good flushing effect and sewage discharge capacity. The internal water circuit design of modern toilets is very complex and requires multiple tests and simulations to achieve both water conservation and a strong flushing effect. Different types of designs such as siphon type, direct wash type, and jet type also put forward different requirements for the manufacturing process.

Final quality inspection

The fired toilet must also undergo strict quality inspections, including appearance inspection, water seal height test, flushing efficiency assessment, etc. Unqualified products will be eliminated or returned for repair, and only toilets that meet the standards can be packaged and shipped out of the factory and enter the market.

A seemingly simple ceramic toilet contains many technologies such as material science, mechanical manufacturing, fluid mechanics, and high-temperature firing. It is the continuous advancement of these technologies that makes modern toilets more comfortable, more environmentally friendly and more intelligent. Understanding the details behind these manufacturing processes can also help us better understand that those seemingly ordinary items in daily life are not actually easily available.Heshan Kingway Hotel Sanitary Ware Industry Co., Ltd. is a national high-tech enterprise integrating independent research and development, production and sales.
